President of COP15 participates in tree planting at Carandá Bosque, Campo Grande

On Saturday (March 28), starting at 1:00 p.m. (local time), the President of COP15 and Executive Secretary of Brazil’s Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA), João Paulo Ribeiro Capobianco, will take part in the Tree Planting Activity at Carandá Bosque neighborhood in Campo Grande.

The initiative is highlighted as the main urban environmental legacy of the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS COP15).

Also attending will be the Executive Secretary of CMS, Amy Fraenkel, the State Secretary for Environment, Development, Science, Technology and Innovation (SEMADESC) of the Government of Mato Grosso do Sul, Jaime Verruck, the Mayor of Campo Grande, Adriane Barbosa Nogueira Lopes, and the Deputy Secretary of the State Secretariat for Government and Strategic Management (SEGOV), Ana Carolina Araújo Nardes, as well as representatives of the Government of Mato Grosso do Sul and the Castoldi Scout Group.

Promoted by the Brazilian Presidency of COP15, in partnership with the Municipality of Campo Grande—responsible for providing the planting site and seedlings—and the Government of Mato Grosso do Sul, this high-level action will bring together authorities, heads of delegation, guests, and representatives of the Parties, who are encouraged to designate representatives to take part in the collective planting, reinforcing the shared commitment to biodiversity conservation and sustainability, in line with the spirit of the conference: “Connecting Nature to Sustain Life.”

Approximately 250 seedlings of native Cerrado species and fruit trees, such as ipês, jacarandás, and angicos, will be planted. The species were selected for their ecological value in supporting pollinators, birds, and other forms of wildlife. The initiative also contributes to offsetting greenhouse gas emissions associated with COP15, while establishing a permanent green space that will serve as a habitat and refuge for migratory species in the host city, strengthening urban biodiversity and ecological connectivity.

The program includes transportation departing from the COP15 Blue Zone at 1:00 p.m., followed by the ceremony and planting activity. Afterward, participants will be taken to Bioparque Pantanal for a guided technical visit.
