Today, November 12th, at 5 p.m., the Brazilian government will inaugurate the Global Ethical Stocktake (GES) Pavilion in the Blue Zone of COP30, in Belém. The space marks one of the final stages of the initiative, which represents one of the four leadership circles of COP30, aimed at mobilizing key sectors that can contribute to priority issues for the conference.
The GES seeks to inspire reflection through ethics and culture on how far humanity has progressed and what actions are still needed to keep the planet from exceeding 1.5°C of average warming above pre-industrial levels, the central goal of the Paris Agreement. Led by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the initiative is being implemented by Brazil’s Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change.
Inspired by the first Global Stocktake of the Paris Agreement, concluded at COP28 in Dubai, the GES builds on the consensus reached by nearly 200 nations to triple renewable energy capacity, double energy efficiency, halt deforestation, and pave the way for a fair, orderly, and equitable phase-out of fossil fuels.
Over the past months, the GES has brought together authorities, Indigenous and traditional leaders, policymakers, religious and spiritual figures, scientists, civil society representatives, activists, and artists, among others, through six regional dialogues held across all continents. They explored pathways for achieving an ecological transformation, emphasizing that while technical solutions already exist, what remains lacking is the ethical commitment to put them into practice.
Expected speakers include:
• Minister of the Environment and Climate Change of Brazil, Marina Silva;
• CEO of COP30, Ana Toni;
• Special Advisor and Assistant UN Secretary-General for Climate Action and Just Transition, Selwin Hart;
• Former President of Chile and co-leader of the South and Central America and the Caribbean Dialogue, Michele Bachelet;
• Managing director for Africa and Global Partnerships at the World Resources Institute (WRI)and Vice-President to co-leader of the Africa Dialogue, Wanjira Mathai; and
• Director of the Center for Earth Ethics and co-leader of the North America Dialogue, Karenna Gore.
