Press conference on COP15 with Marina Silva, João Paulo Capobianco, and Amy Fraenkel

On Wednesday (March 18), at 12:30 p.m. (Brasília time), an online press conference will be held on the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS COP15). Participants include the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change of Brazil, Marina Silva, the ministry’s Executive Secretary and COP15 President, João Paulo Capobianco, and the Executive Secretary of CMS, Amy Fraenkel. The press conference aims to present to the media the main objectives and expected outcomes of COP15.

Hosted by the Government of Brazil, CMS COP15 will bring together representatives from governments, the scientific community, international organizations, and civil society. Over the course of a week, more than 2,000 participants will discuss challenges and solutions for the conservation of migratory species, their habitats, and migration routes.

The high-level international debate will engage the Convention’s 133 Parties in assessing the status of migratory species, setting priorities, and adopting joint decisions on policies, actions, and investments to preserve these species and curb biodiversity loss.

Under the theme “Connecting Nature to Sustain Life,” COP15 aims to advance strategic decisions based on an assessment of the conservation status of species and the measures to be implemented by member countries. The proposal seeks to strengthen protection not only of destinations, but also of migratory routes and stopover sites.

During the COP15, proposals to update Appendices I (endangered species) and II (species with an unfavorable conservation status) of the treaty will be reviewed, along with progress on Concerted Actions, coordinated initiatives among countries to address threats to migratory species. Recommendations to expand regional agreements and the approval of the Convention Secretariat’s budget for the next triennium are also expected.
